Could Chase Tag Be Burnett’s Next Big Sport?
From backyard fun to a fast-growing international sport, World Chase Tag is turning the classic game of tag into a serious athletic competition watched by millions around the world and it may be a sport the Burnett region is ready to embrace.
Founded by brothers Christian Devaux and Damien Devaux after a game in the backyard with Christian’s son in 2011, the sport has exploded onto the global stage. What began as casual meet-ups in London’s Hyde Park has grown into an international league broadcast in more than 35 countries and attracting athletes from 18 nations.
Known for its speed, agility and strategy, Chase Tag features high-intensity 20-second chases inside “The Quad™” a 12m x 12m arena packed with obstacles designed for explosive movement and quick escapes.
In each round, one athlete chases while the other evades, with the winning evader staying on to build pressure and momentum for their team.
If matches end level, a dramatic “Chase-Off™” sudden death round decides the winner.
The sport is also gaining popularity in Australia, with competitive leagues, elite Survival Tag competitions and grassroots youth programs such as RiskyKids operating across Victoria and New South Wales.
RiskyKids describes Chase Tag as a “high-energy, team-based sport where kids run, chase, dodge and outmanoeuvre each other through fast-paced games and seasonal competitions.”
The organisation says the sport helps children build fitness, resilience, teamwork and confidence while learning how to handle competition in a healthy and supportive environment.
With so many young athletes across the Burnett involved in rugby league, gymnastics, athletics, parkour and ninja-style training, Chase Tag could be a natural fit for the region. Its combination of speed, agility and strategy offers something different from traditional team sports and could provide a fun new activity for local youth groups, schools or sporting clubs to explore.
The next World Championships, WCT7, are set for June 2026 in France, perhaps it won’t be long before the Burnett produces its own Chase Tag competitors.
