When was the last time you were actually encouraged to play in the mud?
This September, as part of Seniors Month, Bundaberg locals aged 50+ can swap the garden gloves for a lump of clay with Clay Mates, a series of free pottery workshops at the Bundaberg Pottery Club.
The workshops invite seniors to discover the joy of hand-building pottery in a relaxed, social and welcoming environment.
Experienced ceramic artists will be on hand throughout to teach the basics and support participants every step of the way. No pottery experience is necessary, just a willingness to get creative and have some fun.
Participants will use their newly acquired skills to create imaginative clay creatures. If yours ends up with three ears, wonky legs and a nose where its tail should be, we suspect that only adds to the charm.
Best of all, the creations aren’t destined to gather dust on the mantelpiece. As part of this special intergenerational project, the clay creatures will be professionally fired and donated to local kindergarten children, helping spark creativity and imagination among some of our youngest community members.
And there is a particularly nice local connection for Chitchat readers, with Isis Kindergarten among the participating kindergartens receiving the finished creations.
It means Clay Mates stretches well beyond learning a new hobby. Seniors get the opportunity to work with their hands, meet new people and enjoy a Chitchat over some clay, while local children receive a collection of wonderfully quirky handmade creatures to inspire their own imaginations.
Clay Mates will run during September at Bundaberg Pottery Club, 95C Walker Street, Bundaberg.
