The Childers Hotel is turning up the heat with its Mongrel Menu, inviting those game enough to take on a culinary challenge like no other!
Like most pubs, the Childers Grand Hotel was having a period of struggle coming out of Covid. The Hotel had been having a long period where they couldn’t find a chef at all. Or the one they did find was not what they were looking for.
Finally, Chef Lisa Couell arrived at the door, and they had a chef who could cook well and lived up to what she promised.
That’s when Operations Manager Helen Corliss presented Chef Lisa with an idea worth giving a go. Helen had been thinking about the Mongrel menu for years but knew she couldn’t go ahead with it until a great chef was found. Hoping it was the spark they needed to reignite trade at the hotel.
The idea was stirred from Helen’s father, who had travelled to Texas a few years before Covid and had come back with souvenir menus from big Steak Houses. The idea continued to bake, and Helen decided it was time to try it at the Hotel, but with an Australian twist.
And then the Mongrel Menu was born.
The Mongrel Menu isn’t just about indulgence; it’s about glory. Diners brave enough to finish their meal in under one hour will not only enjoy a delicious feast but will also receive a commemorative stubby cooler and earn a coveted spot on the Mongrel Menu Honour Board.
Those who break a time record get to enjoy their meal for FREE! Fail to finish in under 1 hour, and you walk away with the ‘Takeaway Box of Shame!’.
The Menu debuted on Saturday, April 27th, when the Grand Hotel invited a large group of locals to come and try the Mongrel meals for free and challenge each other for fun.
Since then it’s captured the hearts and minds of diners from all over Australia who travel past, including @Jimmyjudgeeats who set some incredible times, along with some local legends: Jamie Butcher – Childers and Tina Black – Maryborough who are setting records constantly.
Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or just looking to enjoy a hearty meal, this challenge promises excitement for everyone.
