Woodgate’s marine stranding volunteers
Woodgate’s marine stranding volunteers are shell-ebrating thanks to a generous gift from LCB Civil – two brand new “turtle slings” to help transport sick or injured sea turtles in style (and safety). With some local residents tipping the scales at over 90kg, these slings are the perfect catch for moving the gentle giants without breaking a sweat or a shell.
The Sea Turtle Alliance, which works alongside Queensland Parks and Wildlife and local council to protect turtles along the Woongarra coast, says the new gear will help them respond faster and reduce stress for the animals. “They’ll save our backs and a few turtle-slaps!” laughed volunteer Sally Burchardt.
LCB Civil recently completed the Woodgate beach replenishment project and worked closely with turtle monitors during nesting season. Now, their donation means volunteers can carry out rescues with ease, whether moving a patient to care or simply guiding it to a safer spot.
The team would love to welcome more locals to join their shell squad – especially beach drivers who can lend a flipper during work hours.
