Recently retired from a busy role with IDSS, Deb Tedge remains closely connected to the organisation through her ongoing volunteer work.
One project especially close to her heart is Growing Together Green Space, a collaboration between Isis District State High School and IDSS that is helping students, volunteers and community members nurture something practical and lasting.
Deb will share the story behind the project, and the people bringing it to life, at the Childers National Seniors Social Branch September monthly meet-up when she joins IDSS Manager, Deb Noy as the Branch’s Special Guest Speakers.
What is the single most surprising or eye-opening insight your audience will take away from your presentation?
Growing Together Green Space (with financial assistance from FRRR grant and support from Isis District State High School and IDSS) now have a fully functional refurbished shade house at the Ag Dept and a very dedicated little group with support from Leah Adams (teacher aide) are producing a harvest of organic vegetables. Two weeks before the end of the school holidays on Thursdays and Fridays, we were able to add to the organic vegetables for sale on the Isis High Produce Cart in Hinkler Street.
Why does your topic matter right now, and how does it directly impact the daily lives or perspectives of our members?
Many households are struggling with cost-of-living pressures and it is a real challenge to afford fresh, organically grown vegetables.
What is the most common question or dilemma you get asked about this topic, and what is your quick answer to it?
How to become a community volunteer in Growing Together Green Space – As we volunteer on school grounds, there is a process to becoming involved. Volunteers require a blue card and to complete an induction.
Without giving too much away, what is one specific story or case study from your talk that always leaves people talking?
The inspiration for our little group came from one of IDSS clients, Sylvia who lives and breathes being able to plant, grow and harvest.
