As a registered charity and member of the Australian Men’s Shed Association, the Woodgate Men’s Shed is part of a global movement that began in Australia during the 1990s.
Since then, Men’s Sheds have spread across the world, enriching the lives of thousands of men. Today, it is estimated there are almost 3,000 Men’s Sheds operating across 12 countries.
The idea behind the Men’s Shed movement is simple: create a place where men can connect, contribute and support one another while improving their physical and mental wellbeing. Members have the opportunity to make new friends, keep busy, share their knowledge and expertise, learn new skills and give back to the local community.
The Shed’s commitment to men’s wellbeing has recently been enhanced through the purchase of a new spin bike as part of its “Let’s Get Moving” men’s health program. The gymnasium, which is equipped largely through donated fitness equipment, provides members with opportunities to improve their fitness and overall wellbeing. The new bike features an electronic controller with a variety of workout and spin settings and has already proven popular with regular users.
The purchase was made possible through a $700 contribution from Bundaberg Regional Council’s ‘Community Services’ Grant Program.
These Community Services Grant programs provide funding to not-for-profit organisations and community groups, helping them improve local facilities and deliver community focussed initiatives.
The Woodgate Men’s Shed is well known for their fundraising barbeques and by supporting local businesses and community groups through practical projects. Recently, putting their woodworking skills to work as they completed a custom-built market cart for local Woody Gate Gourmet to display fresh fruit and vegetables.
Shed member Ken Packenas took on the challenge, creating a unique cart from recycled timber and repurposed wheelchair parts.
The Woodgate Men’s Shed relies on the support of the local community to continue its valuable work. Community members can help by attending the Shed’s fundraising barbecues, often held at the Woodgate Markets, donating quality tools, materials or equipment, or making a financial contribution to support future projects and programs.
From woodworking and metalworking projects to gardening initiatives, health and fitness activities, fundraising efforts and community support projects, the Woodgate Men’s Shed provides opportunities for local men to stay connected, active and engaged.
Every donation, purchase or word of encouragement helps the Shed continue making a positive difference in the lives of its members and the wider Woodgate community.
