On the night of June 23, 2000, the quiet Queensland town of Childers was forever changed by a devastating blaze that tore through the Palace Backpackers Hostel, a 98-year-old timber building in the heart of town. The fire claimed the lives of 15 young backpackers from seven different countries and left a lasting scar on the close-knit community.
In the years since, Childers has worked tirelessly to honour the memory of those lost. The Palace Hotel was rebuilt as a lasting tribute, and within it stands a striking glass memorial wall created by Queensland artist Sam Di Mauro. The installation features 15 light boxes, each symbolising one of the lives lost in the tragedy. Complementing the wall is a portrait of the victims by Sydney artist Josonia Palaitis, unveiled in October 2002. Together, these works of art have drawn over a million visitors and stand as a testament to remembrance and resilience.
This June marks the 25th anniversary of the fire, a solemn milestone that the community will commemorate with a powerful new performance titled THE PALACE.
Local writer and director Rod Ainsworth has collaborated with Brisbane-based ensemble Topology to create this original song cycle, designed to honour the victims and reflect on the community’s enduring spirit. Based on firsthand interviews with those involved in the recovery, THE PALACE weaves stories of grief, strength, and solidarity into a deeply moving theatrical experience.
Performed at the Isis Cultural Centre, the show will be staged for 2 public performances on Saturday, June 21, just days before the anniversary. The performance will blend spoken word, song, and instrumental music, with performers remaining onstage throughout in a continuous, immersive tribute.
Supported by the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) through Bundaberg Regional Council, the project received $30,000 to fund the creation of the original score.
As the town prepares to mark 25 years since the tragedy, THE PALACE stands as a poignant reminder not only of the lives lost, but of the strength and compassion that rose from the ashes.
