Burrum Hair Lounge has become more than just a salon, with owner Sarah Wells building a welcoming space known for its personalised service, barbering, curl specialists, and commitment to cleaner haircare products.

The salon offers all aspects of hairdressing and is a Lox Toxin salon stocking EVO Hue-verse colour and Evo retail products, along with LOHY and Clever Curl ranges. Sarah has built a loyal client base through her passion for hairdressing and creating a relaxed environment for clients of all ages. However, on May 16, Sarah arrived at the salon to discover the business had been broken into and robbed.

The break-in left smashed glass, stolen hair dryers and salon products, along with money taken from the till, creating thousands of dollars in damage and loss of income for the local small business.

Sharing the devastating news on social media, Sarah wrote:

“We have been robbed. To make things worse, police are not respondent. Insurance closed until Monday, glaziers all closed. Stealing from a struggling business. I’m completely broken. It’s not just the thousands of dollars of damage and stolen goods. It’s the loss of business as well. So disappointing.”

The incident highlighted the difficult reality many small business owners face when unexpected setbacks occur outside normal business hours, with limited access to insurance providers, tradespeople, and immediate assistance over the weekend.

Despite the distressing situation, the local community quickly stepped in to help where they could. Lochlan James of Full Send contracting Pty Ltd offered to attend the salon free of charge to temporarily secure the damaged shopfront, Adam from Low Cost Locksmiths assisted with lock changes free of charge, while other community members reached out with information, messages of support, and words of encouragement for Sarah.

Security camera footage from the salon has since been posted to the business’s Facebook page in the hope the public may be able to help identify those responsible. The footage reportedly shows two separate people — one wearing grey sweatpants and joggers, and another dressed in all dark clothing wearing slides. Anyone who recognises the individuals is encouraged to contact police.

Now, Chitchat encourages the community to support Sarah and Burrum Hair Lounge by booking in for a haircut, colour, barbering service, or beauty appointment in the coming weeks as the business recovers from the incident.

In small communities, supporting local businesses during difficult times can make all the difference — helping not only with financial recovery, but also reminding business owners they are not facing these challenges alone.
