Can You Help Reunite Lost Photos with Their Owners?
A simple purchase at the Lifeline Superstore op shop on Campbell Street, Rockhampton, has uncovered a mystery that stretches all the way to Gin Gin — and the community is being asked to help piece the story together.
Inside a well looked after, second-hand Panasonic Lumix camera, fitted with a 2GB Samsung SD card, was a forgotten collection of photographs. On the back of the card, a hidden label revealed an intriguing clue: “Gin Gin April 60th Anniversary.”
Flicking through the images, the new owner quickly realised these weren’t just everyday snaps.
Among them were precious memories from a wedding, along with touching photos taken in memory at a gravesite.
One gravestone pictured bore the name Mr. Herman Mortenson (1908–1994) — perhaps a vital link to the card’s original owner.
The camera was donated through Lifeline Campbell Street, where the finder also volunteers. However, most of the shop’s stock comes via the central warehouse, meaning the camera could have originated from anywhere between the Fraser Coast and Central Queensland.
Knowing just how treasured these photographs must be, the finder turned to Chitchat to spread the word, hoping the community could help clear up the mystery and reunite the card with its rightful owner. Many of the photos also appear to have been taken at community events in Gin Gin.
Could these memories belong to a long-time Gin Gin family?
Or perhaps to someone who once visited and left a piece of their story behind?
If you recognise the images, the events, or the family name, please contact Lou Costin by email on: costinlou@gmail.com.
With the community’s help, these irreplaceable moments could find their way back home.
