Champions and Community Spirit
The classic Disney movie Robin Hood has been a standout favourite for children over the past 50 years. At the time, many viewers may not have realised that it was starkly different from most other Disney films. There were no tragic opening scenes, no magic spells or sorcery, and no cringeworthy politically correct wokeness. Instead, it told a simple story of skill, courage, and standing up to injustice.
The King and authorities were portrayed with much more accuracy than the usual sanitised and romanticised notions of royalty. Rather than aspirational princes, princesses, and noble leaders, Robin Hood’s government is strikingly portrayed as greedy and oppressive, and the hero was not a prince with special powers, but an outlaw archer, both skilled and humble, with a strong sense of right and wrong. It’s also a wonderful way to teach children about the nature of government and taxes.
Children have been picking up a bow and arrow and playing Robin Hood for decades. But why should they have all the fun?
Fast forward to today, and that childhood fascination can be rediscovered right here in the Bundaberg region.
The Saxon Archery Club is fast becoming one of the region’s standout sporting organisations, combining elite competitive success with a welcoming, family-focused atmosphere that is drawing new archers of all ages to the sport. Boasting both national and state champion competitors, the club has earned a strong reputation on the Australian archery circuit. Members regularly compete at the highest levels, proudly representing Saxon Archery Club at major events across the country. From seasoned champions to up-and-coming juniors, the club’s shooters demonstrate a commitment to excellence that reflects years of dedication, coaching, and teamwork.
Despite its competitive achievements, Saxon Archery Club remains firmly grounded in community values. The club prides itself on fostering a friendly, inclusive environment where families, beginners, and experienced archers shoot side by side. A strong coaching team is at the heart of this success, with knowledgeable and supportive coaches always on hand to guide members through skill development, competition preparation, and safe shooting practices.
For those new to archery, Saxon Archery Club offers an ideal starting point. The club provides equipment for beginners, allowing newcomers to “get a feel for the sport” before committing to their own gear. This approach removes barriers to entry and has helped introduce many people—especially juniors—to the excitement and discipline of archery.
Junior shooters are a particularly strong focus for the club. With a growing number of young members, Saxon Archery Club is investing in the next generation of archers by providing structured coaching, encouragement, and opportunities to compete. The results are already evident, with junior members confidently stepping onto the shooting line at major events.
Saxon Archery Club is actively involved in a wide range of competitions, including the Australian BowHunters Association (ABA) Games and the International Field Archery Association (IFAA) Games. Members also regularly shoot 3D target courses, adding variety and realism to their training and competition experiences.
