Skateboarding in Bundaberg & Fraser Coast

Skateboarding is rolling back to where it all began. After decades of evolution — from street and park skating to vert ramps and even Olympic glory — a growing tribe of riders is rediscovering the roots of the sport: surfing on concrete.

Skateboarding was first invented in the early 1950s by surfers looking for something to do when the ocean went flat. Crude roller skate wheels were attached to a plank of wood and off they went. Instead of waves, they carved driveways, hills and empty pools, mimicking the flowing turns of a surfboard. The 70’s saw the introduction of polyurethane wheels, which allowed greater grip, speed and manoeuvrability. This is when the sport truly took on a life of its own.

Today, along Queensland’s Coral Coast, the Barrier Reef blocks most waves — The only consistent waves around here are the heat waves. And that’s exactly why surf skating is growing across Bundaberg and the wider Fraser Coast. The region has seen an influx of over-30s rediscovering skating alongside sea-changers who brought their surfing lifestyle north.

Surf skates differ from traditional boards thanks to specialised front trucks, risers and looser geometry that allow deep carving without the wheels biting the deck. Riders generate speed by pumping side-to-side, creating momentum without pushing — just like trimming along a wave face.

Purpose-built pump tracks have supercharged the trend. These looping circuits of rollers and berms reward rhythm, balance and flow, making them ideal playgrounds for surf skaters. Fortunately, locals are spoiled for choice, with world-class facilities at our door.

If you want to catch a glimpse of the sport in the local area then head down to Maryborough and get amongst the action of Borough Beats.

The action ramps up on Friday 17 April when Borough Beats takes over the Maryborough Pump Track, ANZAC Park from 2pm to 6pm. Expect a live DJ, lights, sausage sizzle and casual competitions — all completely free. Riders of skateboards, scooters, BMX bikes and blades are welcome, whether you’re chasing speed, style or simply cruising with mates.
