Just a couple of hours up the coast from Bundaberg, the laid-back seaside community of Seventeen Seventy is gearing up for one of the region’s most meaningful and family-friendly events—the 1770 Festival, running from 22–24 May 2026.

Set against the stunning backdrop of Bustard Bay, the festival marks more than 255 years since James Cook first came ashore aboard the HMB Endeavour on 24 May 1770. But this isn’t just a history lesson—it’s a vibrant, evolving celebration that brings together past and present, with strong involvement from the Traditional Custodians, the Gooreng Gooreng people.

Over the long weekend, visitors can expect a packed program of live music, markets, cultural displays, and historical re-enactments. It’s a chance to experience living culture firsthand, while also reflecting on the significance of the first encounters between European explorers and First Nations people.

Held at the SES Grounds along Captain Cook Drive, the festival is completely free, making it an easy and affordable getaway for families, couples, and day-trippers alike. With its mix of coastal charm, community spirit, and cultural storytelling, it’s the perfect excuse to take a scenic drive north.

So if you’re in Bundaberg and looking for something a little different this May, point the car toward 1770—you might just come back with a deeper understanding of our history, and a weekend well spent by the sea.
