As spring unfolds, Childers and the surrounding countryside are painted purple. Jacaranda season is in full bloom, with clusters of lavender-blue flowers spilling on to roadways and paths.

Originally native to South America, particularly Brazil and Argentina, jacarandas were introduced to Australia in the 19th century. The first Jacaranda planted in Australia was most likely in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens in 1864. Walter Hill, Director of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, would have obtained the exotic seeds from a visiting ship that had stopped off in South America.

Their adaptability to various climates and stunning floral display quickly made them popular among gardeners and landscapers across the country. Today, Childers boasts some grand jacaranda displays adding to the beauty of the town.
