Extreme Cowboy Racing Takes Hold In Bundaberg
Extreme Cowboy Racing is a fast-growing equestrian sport that puts the partnership between horse and rider front and centre, combining skill, versatility and fun in a lively, high-energy setting.
Horse-and-rider teams compete over an ever-changing obstacle course designed to replicate real-world farm or ranch challenges. From water crossings, gates, bridges and dragging objects to trailer loading and technical manoeuvres, each course tests control, confidence and adaptability. No two events are the same, keeping the sport exciting and challenging for competitors of all abilities.
Judging focuses on horsemanship, with riders earning points for how they approach, execute and exit each obstacle, as well as an overall horsemanship score. While speed plays a role, it is secondary to smoothness, communication and control. Drawing on elements of dressage, reining and trail riding, competitors showcase skills such as stopping, backing, side-passing, jumping and even roping — all while maintaining a relaxed, loose rein.
What truly sets Extreme Cowboy Racing apart is its atmosphere. Events are known for their upbeat, party-like vibe, complete with loud music and cheering crowds, making it as entertaining for spectators as it is rewarding for riders. With divisions catering to beginners through to advanced competitors, the sport is highly accessible and inclusive, encouraging confidence, problem-solving and a positive “can-do” attitude in both horse and rider.
Locally, the sport continues to thrive through the efforts of Bundaberg & District Extreme Cowboy Racing Inc, which recently wrapped up a successful 2024/2025 season. The club marked the year with its End of Year presentation and awards night on Saturday, 6 December 2025, bringing members together to celebrate a season defined by hard work, dedication and noticeable improvement across the board. The relaxed celebration highlighted the strong sense of community within the club, with thanks extended to Mick McGhee for stepping in as head chef and serving up a popular barbecue, and to T Bar Longhorns for generously supplying a quality rib roast. The evening also acknowledged vital support from the Bundaberg Regional Council Community Services Program, which provided $4,050 in funding to help the club purchase essential equipment including a laptop, Microsoft Office software, printer, iPad, speaker and microphones.
With competitors, volunteers and supporters all contributing to its success, the event was a fitting close to an outstanding season and a reflection of the inclusive, passionate community driving Extreme Cowboy Racing in the Bundaberg region forward.
