Recent online reports claiming Queensland drivers could soon be fined for eating, drinking (non-alcoholic beverages), or vaping behind the wheel have been confirmed as false. However, the rumours serve as a timely reminder of legitimate road rules that drivers can be fined for — particularly distracted driving.

Under current legislation, motorists can face penalties if their attention is taken away from the road — such as while eating, drinking, or adjusting the stereo — and fail to maintain proper control of their vehicle.

Other Queensland road rules like: ‘You cannot splash mud on bus passengers or pedestrians’ and ‘No breaking up a funeral procession’, should be fairly common sense and not require fines.

Drivers are also reminded to maintain a safe following distance, with a recommended two-second gap when travelling over 60 km/h to help prevent rear-end collisions.

Since July 1, 2025, several traffic fines and vehicle registration fees have increased across Queensland, highlighting the importance of safe and attentive driving at all times.
