Childers Sporting Clays
There’s a special kind of thrill in watching a hurtling orange disc of clay get obliterated against the backdrop of a wide Queensland sky — and as many shooters will tell you, once you pop, you can’t stop. Clay shooting might not be something everyone in Childers has tried, but it’s a sport with deep Australian roots and a proud local following.
Childers Sporting Clays is showing the community that clay shooting is not only a disciplined and professional sport, but also a friendly, family-oriented pastime built on safety, skill and good old-fashioned mateship. While it can look impressive from the sidelines, the sport is surprisingly accessible to newcomers of all ages.
Australians have long excelled at clay shooting on the world stage. Legends like Russell Mark, who won Olympic gold in Double Trap at the 1996 Atlanta Games, helped put Australia firmly on the map.
More recently, athletes such as James Willett, Laetisha Scanlan, Catherine Skinner, Michael Diamond and Suzanne Balogh have continued that tradition. Willett set an Olympic record in 2016, before Skinner went on to win gold in Trap at the Rio Olympics — proof that calm focus and quiet grit still carry weight.
That same steady, no-nonsense spirit lives on at Childers Sporting Clays. The club welcomes families, beginners, and corporate groups, with juniors able to participate from the age of 11 under proper supervision.
Safety is front and centre, with experienced members always happy to lend a hand. Local support also plays a big role, with Luke from the Bundy Bullet helping the club by transporting clays and spreading the word that clay shooting is a sport where newcomers are genuinely welcome.
For those keen to give it a go, the club’s “come and try” days are a ripper introduction. With a relaxed barbecue, refreshments, and 25 rounds of ammo, it’s about fresh air, friendly competition, and cracking that disk into powdered clay.
Club shoots are held on the fourth Sunday of each month at Bootharh Road, Horton.

When asked about reports of potential law changes affecting firearm ownership, Club President Rowan said the club is not currently aware of any new legislation but is monitoring the situation closely, as any responsible sporting organisation would.
