Bundaberg Region and the Season
The coming months of September, October and November sweep into the Bundaberg region like a breath of fresh air.
Winter layers are peeled away, the days stretch out longer, and suddenly there’s colour in every direction — in our gardens, our markets, our wardrobes, and even our moods. You can feel the change. There’s more energy in the streets, more smiles, and yes, perhaps even a little more “spring” in your steps.
Can you hear that? It’s the sound of a musician playing for the crowd at the Taste Festival, the notes mingling with the hum of happy voices and the clink of glasses raised in celebration. Festivals like this are part of what makes spring special here in Bundaberg: a chance to gather, to taste, to laugh, and to be reminded of what it means to be part of a thriving community.
Can you smell that? It’s the aroma wafting from Water Street Kitchen, where chefs are creating dishes with delicate zucchini flowers sourced straight from a family farm just down the road. This connection — from farm to plate — is at the heart of our region.
We don’t just eat food; we live it, grow it, share it, and celebrate it.
Springtime produce in Australia is nothing short of abundant. Think of crisp asparagus, tender artichokes, sweet peas, green beans and crunchy carrots. Add to that the leafy freshness of lettuce, arugula, scallions and leeks, along with the earthiness of broccoli, beetroot, radishes, mushrooms and potatoes.
Then comes the fruit — and what a line-up! Strawberries, cherries, apricots, apples, mangoes, bananas, pineapples, lemons and grapefruit. And to crown it all, creamy avocados that make every dish a little more indulgent.
One of the true joys of spring is the return of strawberry season. At Tinaberries, the motto is “Making Sweet Things Happen” — and they do just that. Families flock to the fields to pick sun-ripened strawberries, tasting as they go. Red-stained fingers and sticky chins are the trademarks of a day well spent. The fun doesn’t stop there: Tinaberries also serves real fruit ice-cream that has become something of a local legend. And they’re not alone — Bargara Berries, SSS Strawberries, and even some of the smaller family farms open their gates, inviting locals and visitors alike to share in the harvest.
But it’s not just the fruit and veg that brighten up our region in spring. Our landscapes are painted with blossoms. Bundaberg comes alive with daffodils, tulips, azaleas, sunflowers, petunias and snapdragons, while later in the season you’ll see grape hyacinths, lilacs and peonies. Local growers like One Little Farm and Friday Flower Market make it easy to bring a bunch of sunshine home, from farm to vase, filling kitchens and living rooms with natural joy.
And then there’s the weather — perhaps spring’s greatest gift of all. With average days warming up to a comfortable 25–28 degrees, it’s the perfect time to head outdoors. Spring is the season when our region’s outdoor sports really come alive. Sailing and surfing begin to draw bigger crowds, as locals and visitors take advantage of perfect conditions.
For swimming, we are spoilt for choice: Elliott Heads, with its crystal-clear waters, Kelly’s Beach, a favourite for families, and Nielson’s Beach, a hotspot for surfers and bodyboarders. Whether you’re after the thrill of riding a wave or the calm of gliding across the water on a sailboat, spring sets the scene for healthy, active fun in the sun.
And after the sun sets…
Imagine strolling through the Riverfeast markets on a Friday night, enjoying live music by the water, or wandering the Full Moon Markets in Bargara, where stalls sparkle under fairy lights and the sea breeze carries the scent of fresh food and coffee. Longer days and balmy nights mean more opportunities to connect, unwind and make memories under the stars.
As the world outside bursts into colour, so too does our sense of style. Spring fashion calls for fresh palettes: warm greens, buttery yellows, peachy pinks, orangey reds and every shade of brown — from rich tan to pale beige. Local stylist Ange from Brooklyn Rae Designs has been helping residents embrace these seasonal tones, giving wardrobes a playful shake-up.
And what better time to experiment? Spring is the season to step out of your comfort zone and try something new.
It doesn’t stop at clothes. Hair trends this season lean into natural looks with a twist — longer layers, bold fringes inspired by the 70s, and an embrace of curls and waves.
Bundaberg is blessed with talented stylists like The Place, Bella Donna Hair, Zest Hair, plus the many creative at-home stylists and mums who keep us all looking sharp.
Spring also inspires creativity on our streets. Local muralists — including Kate Victoria Creative and Chantel Art Design — are transforming blank walls into vibrant canvases.
Walk through Bundaberg, Gin Gin or the smaller townships, and you’ll notice shopfronts getting a seasonal spruce-up, not just with paint, but with the colours of spring itself. Businesses know this is the time to refresh and invite in new customers.
But spring isn’t just about what you can see, smell or wear — it’s about how you live. It’s the season to make small changes that lift your spirits and help you break free from the mundane.
Experts suggest writing a to-do list the night before to set your day up right, or even something as simple as wearing a bold colour to put yourself in a new frame of mind.
To truly embrace spring, look outward and inward. Connect with nature by taking walks, having a picnic, or getting your hands dirty in the garden.
Prioritise self-care — nourish your body with fresh produce, drink more water, and give yourself the gift of rest. Declutter your home and your mind, try something new, and above all, spend time with the people who matter most.
Spring in Bundaberg is an open invitation — to enjoy longer days, to breathe the fresh air, to eat food that tastes of sunshine, and to celebrate the colours that only this season can bring. Whether you’re exploring a strawberry field, buying a bunch of sunflowers, updating your wardrobe, or simply sitting outside in the evening light, it all adds up to the same thing: joy.
So, what will you do to bring more joy into your days?
Whatever it is, make it colourful, make it local, and make it count.
This season, let’s all step forward together with gratitude, creativity, and a little extra spring in our step.
