The great state of Queensland has never been one for half measures—“Go Big or Go Home”. This applies to the potholes as well.
With 211.92 potholes per 100,000 people (2024), it comfortably leads the country. Victoria trails behind at 165.05, NSW at 155.01, and most other states sit somewhere in the “noticeably jerky but survivable” range. The ACT, surprisingly, is living in a different reality, with just 7.35 potholes. (Perhaps they levitate).
With the increase in potholes, unscrupulous contractors are making their way around the state. They look to profit from quick fixes.
Be on the lookout for Fill and Pat.
Together they form a highly inefficient team: Phill is on the shovel, Pat follows closely behind, and the road immediately files a complaint. A week of rain and the patch is as reliable as Pat’s trousers covering his plumber’s crack.
The chitchat newspaper would like to acknowledge that this story is for comedic effect. Although the statistics concerning potholes are correct and sourced from www.iselect.com.au/car-insurance/insights/best-states-for-driving, to the best of our knowledge, there is no company called Phil and Pat Quickfix Roadworks, and any similarity to individual names is purely a coincidence.
