Local pet owners are calling on fellow Schnauzer devotees to bring their famously bearded, highly opinionated dogs along for a monthly social gathering in Kalkie.
The Schnauzer Social will be held on the first Saturday of every month from 8am, giving dogs and owners alike a chance to stretch their legs, sniff new friends and silently judge everyone’s grooming standards while comparing moustaches.
Meet-ups will take place at organiser Del Crowley’s yard on Kirby’s Road — a fully Schnauzer-approved space with plenty of room for zoomies, side-eye and stubborn stand-offs.
Originally bred in Germany as farm dogs, Schnauzers earned their keep as expert ratters and reliable watchdogs — which may explain why they still feel it’s their personal duty to alert the household to every passing leaf.
Their name comes from the German word “Schnauze”, meaning “snout” or “muzzle”, a nod to their unmistakable beards and bushy eyebrows.
True to their confident nature, Schnauzers have even been put to work beyond the farm. Historically, some were used as guard and messenger dogs during wartime, proving they’ve always taken their jobs — and themselves — very seriously.
The group aims to help Schnauzers socialise in a relaxed, friendly environment while their humans enjoy a chat, a coffee and share tips and stories.
All Schnauzers are welcome, regardless of size, age or how strongly they feel about following instructions.

Vet Tip from Vets Love Pets:
“Schnauzers are clever and love a challenge — incorporating puzzle toys and training games into their routine is a great way to keep their minds active and prevent boredom-related behaviours,” especially helpful for dogs who already have a lot of thoughts.
