Bundaberg Medieval Combat Club Calls for New Recruits
Bundaberg’s Medieval Combat Club Conroi et Vagabond is on a mission to revive the thrill of full-contact medieval fighting in the region, bringing together history, sport, and community spirit.
Founded in 2015 by a group of local male nurses inspired by the crusade knights of the Knights of Malta, the club has steadily grown into a hub for those who enjoy both the adrenaline of combat and the camaraderie of reenactment.
Today, it’s part of a wider network of groups across Queensland, with teams also active in Gin Gin, Maryborough, and beyond.
The sport, known as Buhurt combat, is as demanding as it is unique. Fighters wear armour from specific grades of metal, weighing up to 45 kilograms, and then undergo around six months of training before competing.
During tournaments, combat is judged on a points-based system, with scores awarded depending on where strikes land.
The Bundaberg group offers a distinctive blend of Buhurt fighting and period reenactment, providing something for both competitive athletes and history enthusiasts. For newcomers, free introductory sessions are available to meet the fighters, try soft-weapon training, and learn about the sport before moving into heavier armour.
Annual membership is just $50 to cover insurance, with qualified trainers guiding participants safely through the ranks. Safety and respect are at the heart of the club, with zero tolerance for drugs or alcohol during tournaments. Members come from all walks of life, including nurses and NDIS workers who often juggle shift work to participate in public shows and events.
With the next season of combat kicking off in mid-October, the club is inviting new recruits to pick up a sword, don the armour, and join the fight to keep this unique, full-contact sport alive in the Bundaberg region.
