Leathercraft Shop Opens In Childers This November

A touch of handmade tradition is coming to Childers this November, as local craftsman Rick Wright opens his new leathercraft shop just two doors down from the local IGA. The store will offer a range of high-quality leather goods, tools, and accessories, as well as hands-on workshops for aspiring makers.

The shop is a natural fit for Childers — a town already known for its country charm, avocadoes, mangoes, and wine. Rick’s store adds to the artisan appeal, bringing craftsmanship and creativity to the main street.

Rick and his wife Kath travel from Toogoom, around 40 minute drive from Childers. Rick’s journey into leatherwork began more than 40 years ago when he made his first belt, and in retirement, he rediscovered the craft while making pencil cases for his nieces and nephews.

Over time, a simple hobby evolved into an impressive level of skill and knowledge, now ready to be shared with others. Drawing on his years as a motorcycle trainer and assessor, Rick brings strong teaching skills to the workshop side of the business. He holds certification for working with children and vulnerable people and plans to host small “maker” sessions, where locals can learn a saddle stitch or perhaps make a belt at the store’s dedicated Belt Bench.

The shop’s shelves will feature a variety of handmade products, including tote bags, handbags, wallets, coin pouches, belts, tool belts, dog harnesses, and hunting or sporting accessories such as fishing rod and rifle bags. Rick also intends to stock quality industry tools and hardware for fellow leatherworkers.

A soft launch will take place on November 1, with friends and family getting the first look at what’s in store. Regular trading hours will run Tuesday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Monday and Saturday by appointment — with plans to hold scheduled classes on those days.

Beyond selling his own goods, Rick hopes to create a hub for local makers. He is keen to collaborate with other leathercraft artisans and support those who share his passion for handcrafted work.

Keep an eye out for Rick around town or pop into the shop this November to see the artistry firsthand. Whether you’re after a new belt, a gift, or a chance to learn an old-world skill, Rick Wright’s new leathercraft shop promises to be a standout addition to the heart of Childers.
