Has your skin suddenly gone dry and/ or itchy since the cooler change in temperature?

Dry skin is an indicator that your skin is lacking oil (aka lipids or sebum). Sebum IS NOT the villain that we have been made to believe. It is essential to maintain hydration, lubrication, protection and prolonged youthfulness all year round, no matter the weather.

Dry skin results in pH imbalances, sensitivities, itchiness, flakiness, wrinkles, lines, loss of radiance and accelerated aging.

Who needs that?

No one!

The sudden change in weather, low humidity, harsh wind and indoor heating zaps your skin of moisture, has a major impact on the appearance and feel of your skin, and most especially your sebum levels and production.

Think of sebum like coconut oil. It is more fluid in the warmer temperatures and becomes solid in cooler temperatures. So extra care is required to keep your skin soft, smooth and glowy all winter long.

It’s time to make some simple changes to your skin care regime and dietary habits to counteract the brutality that the cooler season brings.

Here are some tips to help you avoid dry, dull skin this winter:

  • Increasing Omega 3 EFAs (the good oils) into your diet, i.e., coconut milk & oil, bone broth, grass fed butters, dairy & meats, avocado, seaweed, tree nuts, olive oil.
  • Tempting though it is, hot showers extract essential oils from your skin. Tepid shower are best.
  • Reach for a heavier, oil-rich hydrator &/or add an oil into your skin care regime.
  • Maintain water/hydration levels.
  • Eat lots of delicious soups & stews full of fresh vegetables, oils & bone broth.
  • Increase Omega 3 supplementation.
  • Although the sun’s burning UVBs are not at full capacity during winter, the aging UVAs still are, so don’t forget your sunscreen.
  • Avoid central heating.
  • Enjoy regular skin peels, facials & masques.
